Nick Ledbetter’s initial congratulatory message when he won his first Calhoun County high school golf championship was from the runner-up and his good acquaintance Sawyer Edwards. Numerous more hug, pats and with a bump were waiting for the Weaver senior during the throng of carts and crowds that lined the path between the last green and the Pine Hills Country Club’s house. “It’s extraordinary,” Ledbetter said about enjoying the moment. “It’s amazing, especially following last year’s.”

The Isabel Rogers, perhaps most important hug came from her previous White Plains teammate Abby Gattis who had worn the same crown Rogers had just clinched. “It is a great feeling because of all my old teammates, including some were out to watch the game today and it’s a great feeling to be able to accomplish some thing,” Rogers said. It took about a week to arrive however, the county tourney’s first-round leader in the individual round won championships.

In the team competition, White Plains’ boys kept their lead to take their fifth straight title and Alexandria’s girls fought back from a stroke behind to win two consecutive county titles. Ledbetter followed up his opening round 70 by shooting a 70, which earned him 139, which was eight strokes better than Edwards who is the reigning champion. Rogers scored an 85 on Friday and ended up with a 164, which is three shots higher over the Alexandria’s Avery Prickett.

In the team event, White Plains’ boys shot 603, which was 22 shots more than second-placed Oxford. Alexandria’s girls took back-to-back county titles by shooting 522 and beating White Plains by nine strokes. The final round took place six days later than originally scheduled due to rain on April 8.

Nobody was more grateful that the organizers of the tournament allowed an additional round instead of opting for an 18-hole county championship more than Alexandria head coach Craig Kiker. The team shot a round of 265 yards, just three shots ahead to White Plains, and rallied during after the round. Kiker expressed his gratitude to Pine Hill pro Cory Etter with a huge smile. “They could have made money on the course from paying players to play, but they let youngsters play for just 20 dollars,” he said. “That’s unreal. It’s a huge honor for his. We are grateful to the man for letting us return to play.” Read more… Continue reading…]
