Calhoun County (AL – Calhoun County Sherrif’s Office posted on their Facebook page that Calhoun County lost a deputy Sheriff in the line of duties in November 1962. This LODD (line of duty death) was not lost to history until recently.
Head injuries sustained in a car accident while transporting a prisoner from Tuscaloosa to Deputy Sheriff Walter Raymond Hall led to his death in the UAB hospital. Deputy Hall was a deputy sheriff for just shy of ten years. He was a deputy sheriff under Roy Snead Sr. and Socco Pate.
We were contacted by a descendant of Deputy Hall to provide information about his ancestor. We realized this was a LODD and set about researching, documenting, and recognizing the relevant organizations.
Recently, they received confirmation that Deputy Hall will be listed on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund wall in Washington, D.C. During Police Week 2023, Deputy Hall will be read aloud at the U.S. Capitol from those who are gathered on the National Mall.
He was also approved and added to the Officer Down Memorial Page. He will also be added to the Alabama State Memorial Wall in Anniston and a stone listing all LODDs at the Sheriff’s Office.
You can visit Deputy Hall’s memorials online at https://nleomf.org/?s=walter%20raymond%20hall&id=58053… and https://www.odmp.org/…/26456-deputy-sheriff-walter… . These memorials will be updated later with additional information and directions on where the name will be engraved on the wall.
