Telephone scams are a popular method of stealing our citizens from tens of millions of dollars. Scammers call with a an alias that appears to belong an official of the Sheriff’s Office. Thanks to the internet technology, “internet spoofing” can make any number appear as if it’s from another. If you want to be sure that we are making calls, simply hang up and contact us again using the same number as you have seen. If you dial the number, you’ll be able to get the correct number. The fraudsters will claim that they are employees of the office, usually with the proper names and positions of actual employees. If you’re not sure, do not be afraid to dial or call us to check. The scammer will inform you that you’ve been unable to attend court or are owed fines or someone you love is in prison, and asks you to release them. To pay for these charges the fraudster will request you to pay the money using an e-gift card of some type, Cashapp, CoinStar, or BitCoin. It is important to note that the Sheriff’s Office is in no way a part of the collection of funds to pay fines or release from jail. Fees are paid to the courthouse or to a reputable bonding firm. Be vigilant and don’t hesitate to phone us for any concerns or questions.
