Calhoun County (AL) – Alexandria. Weaver girls finish second in the Thanksgiving Eve tournaments
The Alexandria wrestling team was late to the Clint McCall Duals, and the Valley Cubs were so close to winning it all.
Although the Valley Cubs planned to practice Wednesday, coach Frank Hartzog realized that live competition was better than practice. They were 3-1 in round-robin and lost to Russell County 38-37, in what was essentially the championship match.
Hartzog stated that “It gave us a starting place of reference where are at and where we could go” and that it helped some of the children see where they should be to support the team. It’s important to feel humbled in order to believe that you can work hard.
“Hard work is the best thing. It was an eye-opener for me and gave me hope that I have the potential to do better. It’s up to us to work hard.
The Cubs were behind 33-13, but won three weight classes straight to pull within two. Latrez Turner, Hudson Hartzog both scored pins to keep the Cubs in it. However, Russell County won by technical fall at 120 to secure victory. Preston Jones won the final bout with a pin.
Hartzog stated that it was a winnable double; there is still much to be done. “We had some children step up. It was a great day.
McAdory and Oxford were also defeated by the Valley Cubs. Oxford was victorious over McAdory and White Plains. White Plains was 0-4.

Hewitt Grappling Girls Invitational
TRUSSVILLE Lena Johannson (138), and Trinity Carter (152) won individual titles. Three other Weaver wrestlers were in the top four, as the Lady Bearcats finished in second place in the Hewitt Grappling girls Invitational wrestling tournament.
The Lady Bearcats scored 118.5 point. Daphne won with 159 points the team title.
Johannson won the 138 crown by winning 17-1 with technical falls over Kimber Alford from Daphne. Carter pinched Arab’s Autumn Boutwell within 52 seconds. Both champions are 7-1.
Mariah Johannson, Weaver’s Mariah, finished third in 120. Kallie Mayfield was third in 126. Haylei Hooks was fourth at 165. Anabelle Hilburn, Piedmont’s Anabelle finished fourth in 235. Southside’s Brianna Mercer was fourth in 132.
