Weaver, AL – Weaver has been holding their regular works sessions as well as a City Council Meeting on August 22nd.
Work Session
The session began with a public hearing that was held in the presence of Shelby Peterson with the East Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission. She presented the complete strategy for the town of Weaver that focused on the use of land housing, transportation and communal facilities (parks and recreation) as well as economic development.
The Public Works Director Johnathon Ingram, discussed the costs that comes with Weaver continuing to produce water, versus purchasing it directly from Anniston. The current price for producing water amounts to 78 cents for every thousand and the cost of purchasing it is currently at $1.44 for a thousand. In light of this, the council didn’t take the decision to purchase water, but it could be worth making an emergency connection to the town of Anniston Water and Sewer if it wasn’t priced too high.
There was also a discussion about attempting to obtain an award to pay for expenses for replacing water meters that are in use today with new ones that could transmit data to residents and the city wirelessly. These new meters could also be able to send out alerts in the event that there was a higher than usual usage at a specific address.
The homecoming parade was a topic of discussion however, the council did not have a clear idea of the direction it should begin in. It was decided that a fire in the parks wouldn’t be something that the majority of council members were looking for.
Ingram. Ingram reported that he had received two estimates on building the public works facility. It’s not the original firefighters’ station. It is the smaller one that they currently use. The cost for replacing the roof and repair walls was $1,800 for the metal or $2,200 for paint. The final decision was left to the director of public works to decide and then move forward on the project.
Ingram. Ingram also brought up an RV park that wants buy three meters for water. The bulk purchases were offered the benefit of a discount of $100 per meters. He wanted to find out whether this was still true. The council was of the opinion that precedent had been established and they will continue with the current pricing.
Chief Bush delivered his July written reports.
Chief Bunn informed everyone that an air compressor has been purchased at the center for seniors. The price was $4,600.
The report from the administration said that it might be mandatory to purchase assurance for this technology at city hall. She’s looking for estimates.
The Mayor inquired whether anyone had any queries about the budget, which was to be put up for vote at the council’s meeting, but there weren’t any concerns that were addressed.
The Mayor also examined the transportation contract and the agreement with the East Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission.
The Mayor also stated the fact that Weaver wasn’t included in the disbursement of $250,000 in grant funds for Rebuild Alabama. He is working to resubmit and has the backing by Representative Woods, Senator Kelley as well as Representative Woods.
There are some remaining items in the bathroom renovation project, and when they are finished, the final checks will be made.
The Mayor reminded everyone of the last Weaver Movie Fest and Disc Golf on Saturday the 26th of August, starting around 3 pm. The Mayor asked any city council members who are in town to stop at.
Heritage Day is planned for September 9th. Weaver would like to host an exhibit that will highlight the story of Weaver. Council members were all requested to attend if they could.
