Demetrius Norwood scored his first dunk against Pleasant Valley. It made him feel very happy. He wanted one since freshman year, when he realized he could do it. He wanted to do it again because it felt so good. It didn’t take as long this time. It was the senior forward’s second dunk in three quarters on Thursday night. This culminated a crucial juncture that saw Munford defeat Ohatchee by 58 to 44.
Norwood stated that he knew he would eventually get one. “I wasn’t sure if it would be on a quick break or a putback,” Norwood said. Norwood’s dunk on Thursday was on a fastbreak, much like his first one in the Pleasant Valley final minutes. This basket answered Ohatchee’s first basket in the second half. It also capped six consecutive Munford points that he had scored to open the period and gave the Lions an advantage of 35-26.
He said, “My guy just found you.” “I knew that once I beat my opponent, I would be able to dunk it.”
Ohatchee called the time just after the dunk, and Norwood was unwittingly given the chance to enjoy the moment. Logan Smith, junior guard, said “I told you” as the Lions made their way back to the bench. He had been watching the earlier girls’ game and predicted the dunk. Munford’s Sylvester Smith awarded his brother’s dunk an 8. He was grateful for the environment and effort.
Riley Jones, Lions coach, said that “the thing is, out among all the team, he does it the best, so he’s happy for me.” He’s been asking me for one since last year. He got one. He asked me if there was a chance he could dunk it. He said that as long as it goes in, it’s okay. Norwood attempted a second dunk about two and a quarter minutes later, but that didn’t go as well. Javion White was there for the rebound and he took the lead to nine. White made a missed free throw in the next exchange to extend the lead to two digits. [read more…]
SAND ROCK 90, Cole Wilson made eight 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. Alex Odam was 7-for-8 at the foul line to help the Bulldogs recover from a seven point deficit. He said, “I was trying to do my best for my team to get back up in this game.” It was hard work, but we stuck to our game plan and won the fight. “I came out and hit some shots early, which helped boost my confidence so I continued shooting. Although I was cold when we arrived at the half, my teammates found me and were able to adjust and get the shots down when they needed.
“I’m thankful for the win. We all had a great night. It wouldn’t have been possible without the help of my brothers.” Wilson and Odam won big, while Wilson and Jacob St. Clair had huge nights. St. Clair hit six 3-pointers. Each team scored 11 points.
