Montgomery, AL – Monday September 11th 2023 marks the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attack that targeted the World Trade Center in New York City as well as the Pentagon as well as United Airlines Flight 93 which was destroyed into suburban Pennsylvania. Patriot Day serves as a commemoration of the lives lost that morning in September.

A joint resolution that was approved on 12/18/2001 (Public law 107-89) has declared September 11th of every calendar year to be “Patriot Day” and also orders that the flags to be reduced to half-staff throughout the morning on the 11th of September.

Additionally, Governor Kay Ivey released the following proclamation:

“I am in charge of displaying flags at half-staff on 11 September 2023, to commemorate and honor the 3000 Americans who were killed on September 11, 2001.

The events of September 11, 2001 will be forever remembered as a pivotal moment in the history of our country. In the year 2001, the United States endured one of its most harrowing, dark days, marked by devastation destruction and thousands of deaths. While it was a period of unimaginable loss, it was an opportunity for our country to show its strength and showed its strength and capability to conquer the impossible. America and her people stood up to the challenge in many ways.

This day, we give tribute to the incredible courage and sacrifice of first responders medical personnel, service members and the brave civilians who jumped into action that fateful day and into the future ahead to help their fellow citizens. We should never forget the brave souls who risked their lives to save countless people as well as the selfless sacrifice of remarkable citizens of Flight 93.

My prayer and hope for our nation is that we will never forget those who lost their lives in the war and our sacrifices in the years that came. I pray that God be with us and continue blessing the mourners as well as those who have been injured as well as our brave patriots along with all the United States of America.

The flags will be raised to half-staff throughout the day on September 11, 2023.”
