TUSCALOOSA TUSCALOOSA In the most high-stakes match in the history of the program the The Gulf Shores High School used its Royal flush to win the first state football championship.

The senior Ronnie Royal ran 22 times for 188 yards, scoring with touchdown runs of 55 and 2 yards. He also receiving three passes for 39 yards, and threw an outstanding highlight reel, a one-handed interception to help lead the Dolphins to a 21-14 win over the defending champion Ramsay in the game of the Class 5A title game held on Bryant-Denny Stadium.

“I’ve been working towards this for all of my life since the time I first started playing varsity football when I was in the 7th grade.” stated Royal, an North Carolina State player who moved from Alexandria as freshman. “All I ever wanted to do was do was work hard and be hopeful of winning the championship.”

Gulf Shores (15-0), directed by Mark Hudspeth, won the first state football championship in the history of the school and was the winner of Day 2 of 2023’s Super 7 Championships.

“What an evening – an unrealized dream,” Hudspeth said.

Leroy (Class 1A) and Mobile Christian (Class 3A) have also taken home state titles earlier in the day, following Central-Phenix City claimed the 7A title on Wednesday. In 2023, the Super 7 concludes Friday with championship games for Classes 4A, 2A and 6A. and 6A scheduled to take place on the Friday. For Class 4A Cherokee County plays Catholic-Montgomery at 11 a.m.
