Piedmont, AL –Last week last week, Piedmont Police Department Piedmont Police Department successfully apprehended two suspects following a high-speed chase that led to the finding of illegal drugs. The incident took place on the 6th of December the police were called to an altercation in an Family Dollar store on Highway 278.
The incident within the Family Dollar store prompted officers to search for an unidentified Red Toyota Camry, identified as the vehicle that was suspected of being involved. On arrival in the area, a police officer spotted an unidentified Red Toyota Camry leaving the area and driving through a stop signal. While conducting an ordinary traffic stop, police identified the driver’s age as 38 Shawn Donta Daniels and the passenger as 46-year old Edward Marice Johnson.
In defiance of the officer’s directions to leave the vehicle, Daniels and Johnson were reported to have sped off in a pursuit that lasted for a long time into Kines Road. The pursuit continued even as the car travelled through a field along the road, eventually which led to the suspects leaving the vehicle and escaping in the woods around them.
When they secured the scene the officers tow off the black Toyota Camry and discovered a large amount of illicit drug trafficking. The total amount number of 1.6 kilograms of methamphetamine an 84-gram amount of cocaine, prescription narcotics, as well as drugs were taken from the vehicle.
A warrant for detention was issued to Daniels and Johnson which led to the enforcement of a search warrant within the 1300 block Kines Road. In the course of the search, officers discovered additional items of contraband, such as firearms, one pound marijuana as well as 5 grams crack cocaine.
Shawn Donta Daniels was taken into custody in the area and charged with trafficking methamphetamine and trafficking cocaine, 3 counts of Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substances (UPOCS) as well as felony attempts to escape from arrest, in addition to Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (UPODP). His bail was determined at $73,000.
Edward Marice Johnson voluntarily surrendered at the Piedmont Police Department and has been accused of trafficking methamphetamine drug trafficking, UPODP three counts of UPOCS and misdemeanor trying to escape. Johnson’s bond was fixed at $60,000.
The two individuals are scheduled to appear for court dates within the next year. This is an important step in the ongoing efforts to stop illicit drug activity within the Piedmont region.
