The front-runners of one of the Jacksonville High School’s more popular senior football teams was slayed with two memorable arm movements on Friday.

Then, Jim Ogle waved his left arm toward the sidelines of his home, wagging off his coaches while they contemplated taking his place in their 44-20 loss to the top-ranked Catholic-Montgomery in the class 4A quarterfinal.

Whatever hurts to raise his newly hurt right arm the one that he utilized to throw himself into the possibility to participate in Division I college football in Troy University, his left arm was telling him he wanted to guide his team to victory.

Then came what could become the worst arm swing of them all … by using the right hand to throw an Imoree Young-esque pass at that corner in the final zone.

Young took Ogle’s hope to trigger the miracle return, but outside of boundaries.

That was the final gush of Jacksonville’s efforts to extend the second-longest playoff run it has ever had. The final words to summarize Ogle’s four seasons as Jacksonville’s first quarterback and his five years as a contributing player, was a different kind of hurt. Ogle raised his right hand to wipe tears away.

“It’s an amazing thing,” he said, his eyes red, straying over his signature crossed-shaped eye. “Not many people are fortunate enough to find themselves in the same situation that I’ve found myself in.

“Playing in the 8th grade and gaining the experience to play in the state championships beginning and coming in for four years later and all the players I’ve played with, would not trade it for all the world.”

Let us not forget that his last Jacksonville team was 10-3. It was four teams that has ever been part of Jacksonville history to record two-digit wins.

The 15-member senior class includes standouts such as wide receivers Ky’dric Fisher as well as Damonte Sinclair as well as linebackers Charlie Wright and Ryan Mitchell and nose tackle Lewis Bitticks. 32-15 and won more than one playoff win in each of the four seasons.

Five for Ogle who was a punter and in the backup position on the team in 2019 that was a runner-up in Class 4A. up.

Their impact goes beyond the numbers.

“They’ve created a fantastic friendship,” Jacksonville coach Clint Smith stated. “Their spirituality and the values the young men have brought to our FCA and everything else has been a huge benefit for our team.

“They’re simply a very close group of people who play a great deal together. We’re going to be greatly missing them.”

The players came into the game with a swollen ankle. Fisher is Jacksonville’s most popular passer, was suffering from an ankle injury that restricted his decoy role in the second quarter in game. Golden Eagles’ 28-21 victory against Bibb County, in round two.

In addition to a 12-yard pass to Ogle to score a touchdown. Fisher was able to catch two passes with 17 yards.

“He was injured on his ankle,” Smith said. “He was able to play all of the second half Bibb County, mainly as a decoy and he actually was the one to make the winning catch of the game. He took it in and Jim struck him in a fantastic way.

“He was badly injured. Everyone’s banged up to certain degree. He did the best possible through it.”

With Fisher being unable to play at a 100, Jacksonville found itself having to keep up with quarterbacks and Troy to fend off Caleb McCreary’s run pass threat, and everything that comes from it.

McCreary made touchdown passes that went 35 yards for Brody Hudson and 11 yards to Jo’Tavion Pierce. He also scored touchdowns with a run of 25 three and one yards.

A running behind Joshua Griffin broke a 57-yard touchdown on the first offensive play during the 3rd quarter.

Despite being sacked by Ogle to prevent a safety on Jacksonville’s initial play of the game, Jacksonville’s Golden Eagles found themselves on Catholic’s 1-yard line in hopes to make it 16-7 in the second half.

A false-start penalty set up the Golden Eagles up on third down Then Jacksonville went with John Ducar’s field goal of 22 yards to make it 16-10 by 3:46 in the second quarter.

McCreary’s 25-yard touchdown run in 2:44 brought it to 23-10, and Griffin’s 3rd-quarter sprint brought it to 31-10.

The last touchdown from Ogle’s long high school career, that spotted Fisher for a tiptoe grab at the pylon. It closed the margin to 31-17 by 3:28 in the third quarter, but McCreary’s next touchdown destroyed that advantage before the clock reached fourth quarter.

With his primary target hobbled and unable to play the role he’s played for many Ogle scores, Ogle attempted to cover the ground up with his feet. He ran several times in the back pocket. One of them was one that caused him to hobble.

Swirling and battling for more miles, Ogle was tackled on his right shoulder just in the direction of Jacksonville’s sideline. Ogle was removed from the field in a hurry for a play, clearly preferring the right side of his arm.

He returned for an offer for Zae English, and even it was a double Ogle over in the pain.

He didn’t be seen, just ignoring any thoughts of it, before using his injured right arm to throw another throw. It was very close to adding the score to his total of his career.

For the specific nature of the injury suffered by Ogle, Smith said he wasn’t certain if it was an injury to the shoulder or a clavicle. Ogle described it as “all an blur.”

“Coach Pat (Lane Patterson) will be evaluating his performance once we have the player in,” Smith said. “He was determined to win the game and got into the game and sucked it out. He’s competitive, and will be perfectly.”

Ogle scored 16-for-29, 2 touchdowns and 163 yards during his last game an Golden Eagle.

English was the first to catch Ogle’s touchdown pass, battling through a call for interference before dropping the ball in his own direction. English was a junior. also ran for an additional 61 yards.

At the conclusion of the senior class’s last season Jacksonville stood as the final team within Calhoun County and Class 4A Region 4.

“We’ve been playing together since we were just 6 years old. older,” Ogle said. “We played with each other. We’ve always said that, when we first arrived this place as freshmen, that regardless of what happens after our time was done we would be with each other. We did.

“Give the credit due to Catholic. They had a blast playing an opponent and created more games than we did and we all did it with them.”
