    • Two individuals were awarded two recipients of the Earl Haynes Award for Excellence from Chief Gary Sparks and the City of Oxford. Chief Sparks said that on April 25 2023, the Oxford Fire Department received a call about a fire in a structure that had an entrapment. After spotting the smoke emanating from the house of her neighbor, Mrs. Tennille Wilson entered the home to help her neighbor. Ms. Wilson was soon overcome by the massive smoke and needed to leave the residence and was able to find Capt. Chad Gilchrist in civilian clothes ready to answer the call. Capt. Gilchrist was close to the home and ran to the scene wearing shorts and a T-shirt without protective gear or SCBA. Capt. Gilchrist determinedly searched the house and found the victim. Captain Gilchrist took care of the victim, and then returned to the house to search for potential victims. OFD personnel arrived at the scene and began providing medical attention for the victim. We are grateful to Mrs. Wilson and Capt. Gilchrist for their courage and bravery when faced with such risk. It was also mentioned that the man who was cut down was a patient of Hospice. His son informed the Chief that his courageous actions helped give him quality time with him prior to when the time he passed away.
