Calhoun County, AL Calhoun County, ALThe National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released an initial report on the 9th of March rail accident within Calhoun County. Two locomotives and 29 railcars were involved, in the incident, according to the report. Three tank cars that were carrying dangerous materials were destroyed in the incident, however the cars were not damaged and didn’t release any hazardous substances and they did not suffer any injury. The report does state that it appeared that certain train cars weren’t properly connected. The NTSB isn’t blaming the recent train crash at Calhoun County on improper couplers. They say that the trains “were without aligning control couplers” in accordance with Norfolk Southern protocols. Without these couplers in place, the NTSB stated that the locomotive connections are not able to properly lateral coupler motion under compressive forces in the train. Presently, Norfolk Southern says the train derailment was responsible for $2.9 million in damages. It could take several weeks before the location of train cars that were damaged is restored to normal, as train cars are still in the vicinity of the tracks, and railroad crews continue to repair the tracks damaged caused by the derailment. The complete NTSB report isn’t scheduled until at least the end of the year.
