Jorda Crook is going to tell you that she’s not a “basketball person.” But, it’s funny because for someone who isn’t, she finds a way of dominating every basketball game. Ohatchee senior Ohatchee junior who puts power in power forward set another Calhoun County Tournament girls scoring records Tuesday. She scored 49 points and grabbed 20 rebounds to lead the Lady Indians’ 64-53 victory over Jacksonville at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
Third-seeded Lady Indians (18-3), will now face Anniston in Thursday’s semifinal at 3 p.m. They will attempt to reach the finals, the first time since 2008. Crook will be attending UAB to play volleyball. She doesn’t plan to play basketball, but excels at every sport, even those not on her top list. She said, “I don’t like basketball but I try to do my best.” “Even though I wasn’t the best player, I gave my all. My dad tells me that God has given you the talent, and that I must use it.
Bryant Ginn, Ohatchee’s coach, has been the beneficiary Crook’s best efforts and doesn’t believe in the “not a basket person” thing for a second. Ginn stated in the most affectionate terms that “A, she’s lying, and B, she is a competitor, and the ultimate competitor.” It doesn’t matter what sport it is, she wants it to be her best and thrives in the spotlight. It doesn’t matter which sport it is. Last year, she won the state track championships after trying something new. She could have won another in high jump, but she had to play volleyball. She is a competitor because of that.
Crook might try her best every time on the floor but the Calhoun County Tournament seems like Crook’s best. She set the single-game scoring record for girls with 43 points against Alexandria last year. She has scored 149 points in her three quarterfinals round matches and grabbed 48 rebounds. She moved three places higher on the state’s all time girls scoring list with Wednesday’s outburst, moving into a tie 31st place with St. James’ Leslie Claybrook (1986-1989) – 2,668 point. This season, she holds the highest average scoring score in the country. Ginn stated, “We are almost blind to the things that she can do.” She was a great leader and played hard, which is exactly what we needed. She demanded the ball at the very end. That’s what you want from your leader. She wanted the ball, and you want that. It was a close game. “We had to have her.” [ continue reading…]
