Seedings and seedings for this year’s Calhoun County softball tournament to be decided, Piedmont has carved itself an excellent position in the debate. Savannah Smith struck out 10 batters to earn an all-hit four-hitter. Armoni Perry hit a triple and scored an RBI in the Bulldogs defeated Class 6A Oxford by 2-0 on Thursday afternoon at Choccolocco Park. The county seeding game will take place on scheduled for Sunday on the field at Wellborn High School, and the record of Piedmont against county rivals is currently 10-2. Three-A is the class of Piedmont. Bulldogs are 1-1 in the 6A Oxford as well as 4A White Plains, 1-0 against 5A Alexandria and one-up in 4A Jacksonville and a combined score of 4-0 against 3A rivals Wellborn, Saks and Weaver. Oxford (11-3) as well as Alexandria (16-12) and Alexandria (16-12) are classified according to the Alabama Sports Writers Association poll. White Plains (12-8) is been selected for consideration in 4A.
Piedmont (15-7) with a record of 15-7, having reached the state tournament the first time in its fast-pitch history during the past two seasons it is the No. fifth on the 3A top 10. The Bulldogs also won their first tournament, the White Plains Lady Wildcat Invitational and beat Oxford, Alexandria and White Plains in the process. Oxford also defeated Piedmont in the pool. Piedmont reached the semifinals at Oxford’s Hixson (Tenn.) Hixson (Tenn.) High School tournament over the weekend. “I am extremely proud of the way our team has played recently,” Piedmont coach Rachel Smith stated. “We’ve seen a lot women step in during crucial moments and play to win games against tough opponents. “We know that we must to keep improving and keep our eyes open. I love these guys and their attitude to work. It’s a lively and competitive group.”
Piedmont also scored the RBI also from Abby Baird on Thursday, and Ava Pope had two of the Bulldogs who scored six hits. Kaelyn Crossley was the only player to score the other two hits for Oxford including the triple.
CLEBURNE County 5, Jacksonville 3Kaden Pritchett hit 2-for-4 and had two RBIs and two doubles in the lead of the Tigers. Cleburne County also got a hit and RBI two each of Cori Austin as well as Humphries. Carlee Hiett pitched an entire game, distributing seven hits in seven innings, and striking out five batters , with one walk. Sara Kate Adams led the way for Jacksonville with two RBIs, a double and a hit. Lacey Barnes went 3-for-4 with the triple and scored a run. Carli Fritts hit eight batters in seven innings. She she held Cleburne County to five hits but she gave up five runs earned.
MUNFORD 16 TALLADEGA 1.Khloe Shears pitched two flawless innings She struck out the of the six batters that she encountered. Emma Gaither held Talladega to the lone hit in the two innings she pitched relief.
Kastin Lathem hit 5-for-5 and an RBI home run. Chloe Pickette and Blair Darby also had three hits each while Jena Gaither’s hit came with the home hit.

Hayes Harrison’s grand slam during Thursday’s opening game was the highlight of that day’s events for Oxford which then went on to beat Pell City by 7-3, and then 4-2 in Class 6A Area 13 baseball. Two wins on Thursday helped give Oxford an easy sweep of two area counters with a 7-5 win on the previous day against Choccolocco Park, a victory in the tiebreaker match. The wins came just only hours after Oxford (20-5) was able to climb one position to the No. 1 in Class 6A of the Alabama Sports Writers Association poll. They are also No. 1 in the Alabama Sports Writers Association poll. Yellow Jackets were also ranked No. 1 . in Prep Baseball Report rankings.
Harrison’s two-out full-count grand slam ended a 3-3 tie at the top seventh inning of the first game of the day. Oxford also scored two doubles with Peyton Watts and Forrest Heacock. Sam Robertson went 2-for-2 with an RBI as did Carter Johnson had two hits and an RBI. Trace Adams had a single and an RBI.
Watts pitched three flawless innings of relief, with five strikeouts to win. Johnson took on the pitching duties for the opening four innings. In the second game of Thursday, Watts, Harrison, Robertson and Caleb Thomas had an RBI each. Eli Bozeman and Roby Brooks joined forces to limit Pell City to just three hits. Bozeman knocked out six batters in three innings, and Brooks won with three strikeouts over four innings.
ALEXANDRIA 5-1, BAKER 3-5: Alexandria, No. 3 in 5A Class Split with 7A Baker which has received more votes on the ASWA poll. This comes on top of Alexandria (17-5) beating 5A No. 2, Mobile Christian 4-0 on Tuesday. In the first game, Tripp Patterson went all the way in an eight-inning contest that saw him allow 9 hits, and 2 earned runs, with two strikeouts and a walk.
Alexandria was leading with two runs in 8th inning’s opening. Ian Cartwright led off with the double and scored when Aiden Brunner hit a single. Seth Johnson singled and Zach Baskins was able to walk in front of Samuel Henegar, who singled Johnson home. Brunner was 4-for-4 and had an RBI as well, while Henegar hit 2-for-4 and added two RBIs. Ty Brown also had an RBI. In Game 2 Brayden Thacker as well as Cartwright joined forces to limit Baker to just six hits. Cartwright gave up two innings in relief and three strikes as well as three walks. Brown was the only Alexandria player to have two of four hits. Aaron Johnson and Deshaun Foster were both hit in the same space and Johnson also had an RBI.
DONOHO 4. JACKSONVILLE CHRISTIAN 0.Blake Sewell and Nic Thompson teamed up to throw a two-hitter and Donoho took the lead the first time since its game on March 16. In the rankings of at No. 4 in the Class 2A division in the most recent ASWA poll The Falcons increased their record to 11-1. Sewell took the victory after five innings. Sewell hit nine batters, and gave up two hits.
Thompson had a hitless two-inning stint, with four strikeouts, and one walk. Thompson also hit a home run on his own. The JCA’s Cam Moses spread out five hits and allowed one earned run permitted in 5 2/3 innings. He was knocking out 6 batters, but giving up six walks. He also scored two hits for JCA. Ethan Fair retired the only batter he encountered.
JACKSONVILLE 11 CLEBURNE COUNTY 0.Ryan Mitchell pitched three-hit inning over five innings with four batters struck out with no walks. Jacksonville scored 15 hits at a 4A Class Game 9 in Area 9. Will Greenwood, Jim Ogle, Jackson Bonner and Drew Pridgen each had two RBIs. Ogle and Pridgen each had three hits. Greenwood, Bonner and Gavin Peeler each had two hits.
