18 contenders have been announced for the local office in Juneau this year.


Candidates had until 4:45 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 3, to register to contest the four vacant Assembly seats as well as two vacant school board seats during the October. 3 election.

The pool this year is larger than the one from last year’s, in which 5 incumbents were sole candidates in the race and were reelected.


Juneau Assembly areawide seats


The deadline for Monday’s submissions is now set. candidates for the two seats in the area-wide Assembly seats include Paul Kelly, Ivan Nance, Nathaniel “Nano” Brooks JoAnn Wallace, Ella Adkison, Michele Stuart-Morgan, Emily Mesch, Dorene Lorenz, Laura Martinson McDonnell and Jeff Jones.

The person who has the highest number of votes in the race will be awarded an election for a term of three years. The second-placed candidate will take on with the remainder of two terms in the seat which was held by Carole Triem until she resigned earlier in the month.


The Assembly Member Maria Gladziszewski holds the other seat that is a regional one. As she served three years on the Assembly and isn’t permitted to run for a third term.


Assembly Districts 1 & 2


In District 1 incumbent Alicia Hughes-Skandijs is running to reelect Joe Geldhof. In District 2 the incumbent Christine Woll is running against David L. Morris. Dorene Lorenz initially filed to run in District 2, but she resigned and refiled to contest an all-area seat on Monday.


Both seats are three-year term full time. Juneau residents are eligible to choose to vote for any of the candidates, regardless of where they reside, however candidates must reside in the district in which they are running.


Juneau School Board races


Four candidates are competing for two schools board seats. The incumbent Brian Holst is running for the second time to face Paige Sipniewski, Britteny Cioni-Haywood and David Noon. Two of the top candidates get three-year terms.


Once they have been certified to run Candidates must wait until Friday to pull out in the event. Write-in candidates are given until September. 26 to register to run. Their names will not appear on the ballot but may be written into by voters.


The Juneau by-mail local elections begins in the middle of September. Deadline for Juneau residents to sign up to vote is September. 3.
