Small plane crash close to Old Harbor, a village Old Harbor — on the southeast end of Kodiak Island — on Sunday afternoon, causing two people dead.
An Coast Guard spokesperson said via email on Sunday that five persons were on board the Piper Cherokee when it went down approximately 3 miles to the to the north Old Harbor. Guardsmen from Coast Guard Sector Anchorage received the call around 3:00 p.m. the following day.
Two people perished during the accident, and three survivors being found at the wreckage site. One of the victims was said to be critically ill and was transported through a helicopter Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center. Two other patients who were injured, but stable, were transported by a Good Samaritan plane to the waiting medical personnel.
The plane was operated by Kodiak based Vertigo Air, a subsidiary of Vertigo based in Kodiak. Vertigo Air did not respond when contacted via telephone early on Monday morning.
The causes of the crash are being investigated.
