The more than 3000 Juneau skiers who have purchased passes for the Eaglecrest Ski Area will have to endure another delay in the mountain’s scheduled opening.
Eaglecrest set to open on Saturday. It was delayed one week due to the lack of snow. Director Dave Scanlan said on Thursday it’s not clear what time there will be enough snow to start the season.
style=”font-weight: 400″ style=”font-weight 400 ;”>”We’re still waiting for Mother Nature to provide us the temperatures needed for snow that naturally falls, and also temperatures to start our snowmaking system and have enough snow coming in the upper and lower areas to make the mountain ready for time of the season.” He said.
Scanlan stated that it’s not unusual for the November and December weather to be difficult to forecast. The warmer and drier temperatures indicate that Eaglecrest isn’t able to make up for the absence of actual snow by using the 22 snowmaking machines. He’s optimistic that the weather will change to the mountain’s advantage sooner or later.

The meteorologist Pete Boyd with the National Weather Service office in Juneau told us that we can anticipate an overnight snowfall that will reach Juneau. However, once that snow has gone the weather is expected to change to the warmer and wet side to at least the next week.
“Not all that great for an immediate opening in Eaglecrest,” he said.
Boyd said that the uncertain winter conditions are not typical in Southeast Alaska, but it seems Juneau may have a smaller number of inches of snow. He said that it’s the season of an El Nino year, a natural pattern of climate that could mean that at times, it is higher temperatures than normal.
