In 2018, Ernestine Schaankalaxt’ Hayes home caught on firespan styling=”font-weight 400 ;”>. While she was busy negotiating with contractors, insurance and other professionals, her writing was put on hold. She lived in apartments and hotels, saving her entire life to fix the house.
She was awarded the $50K United States Artists fellowship last week. This will enable her to get over her loss and start writing again.
Hayes stated that she was “here and there” and didn’t have the time to set up a computer or have a writing area. “But I was writing on an iPad and taking notes to myself, and doing a lot more texting to myself span>
She is now rebuilding her life and the house is almost complete.
“Span style=”font weight: 400 This fellowship has allowed me catch up on what I owe to the IRS on all of this, all these expenses for rehabilitation and has enabled me to afford to rent my little apartment,” Hayes stated. I’m now in a better place. This will allow me to spend more time writing and being involved in my next book span>
This is precisely the kind of thing that the fellowship was created for. The fellowship is awarded to artists from all fields, including theater, writing, and architecture.
Hayes said that she has received more from receiving fellowships and awards than just funding. It made Hayes feel valued.
Hayes stated, “When I was awarded the Rasmuson distinguished artists [in 2021],” Hayes stated. It made me feel valued.
She said her next book is about “spoken forests.”
span style=”font weight: 400 This thought occurred to me because I realized that there are beings within the spoken forest who are related and they are holding onto everything we feel we have lost,” Hayes stated. “People we don’t find, missing people, and people who have fled boarding schools but are never found. They are there for everyone, maybe even every person who enters the forest. They will greet us .”
Throughout the chaos of losing her house, she kept track of all these ideas. With this award, she is closer to putting her ideas on paper.
