The period for filing candidates for Juneau’s October. 3. municipal elections started Friday and four candidates have been officially approved to run to date.

Candidates for Juneau’s open Assembly seats and two vacant school board seats must wait until 4 p.m. on Monday, July 24, to submit their applications to the office of the city clerk.

As per the website of the city, school board members Paul Kelly and U.S. Coast Guard veteran Ivan Nance have filed to contest the two vacant local Assembly seats.

One of the seats for the entire region is currently being held by Maria Gladziszewski. She has served three terms but isn’t permitted to run for another term. Carole Triem recently resigned from her seat in the area. A former Assembly members Loren Jones will be filling her position until the next election. The candidate from the area with the highest percentage of votes will be able to win the entire three-year period, while the second-placed candidate will serve the remainder of the year of Triem’s term.

Present Assembly lawmakers Christine Woll and Alicia Hughs-Skandijs have both applied for reelection in district 1, 2. There was no one approved to run for school board until Friday afternoon.

Candidates from the Areawide category can reside in any town, however those running in districts 1 and 2 must reside in the respective districts. Candidates must complete an application for candidacy and a nomination form with at minimum 25 signatures, a declaration of candidacy as well as the Alaska Public Offices Commission financial disclosure form in order to be eligible to run for office.

If you’ve considered running, but haven’t decided, Andi Hirsh from the city clerk’s office suggests you have time to think about making a decision.

“I would suggest, in case you’re not sure you should get the required paperwork,” she said on Juneau afternoon Friday. “And you’ll must wait until July 28 to remove you name off the voting .”

Hirsch says that the biggest mistakes that candidates commit when they file for office is illegible handwriting on supporting forms or providing the addresses of supporters on the petition to nominate.

Juneau’s local elections is held via post. Ballots will be sent to registered voters around the middle of September. Two polling places will be open on the Monday of September. 18, for voting in person up to Election Day, and secure drop boxes will be set up throughout the town to receive completed ballots.
