A collective sigh relief from tribal leaders across the country after it was announced that US Supreme Court upheld the Indian Child Welfare Act last month.
They feared that they would be unable to protect their children if ICWA was overturned it could unravel more than the tribal authority that governs child custody disputes.
In Juneau Afternoon On Juneau Afternoon, three Alaska Native leaders weigh in on the issue.
- Valerie Davidson, director of the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium explains how ICWA helps keep decisions taken to safeguard children closer to home.
- Alex Cleghorn, long-time Alaska Native Justice Center attorney and the Chief Operating Officer of the organization, discusses the fundamentals behind ICWA.
- Jim LaBelle, director of the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition is able to get right close to the heart of the issue, when he tells the personal story of his family.
