A number of seats are scheduled to be available on three the Juneau city boards, as well as on an advisory panel. Juneau citizens have 2 weeks to submit their applications.


Three seats are available for the Planning Commission. 3 seats on the Bartlett Regional Hospital board, four on the Board of Equalization and one on the Systemic Racism Review Committee.

We’d like to see as diverse as the community we have. .”

Commission for planning


Planning commissions are comprised of nine members that examines private and public development plans to verify that they meet the city code and zoning regulations. They meet on the on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, at 7 p.m.

The projects through the planning commission vary from single houses to large-scale waterfront development. The commission last week accepted Douglas Indian Association’s proposal to construct a culture learning center. In the summer, they ratified Huna Totem Corporation’s proposed Aak’w Landing project, and recommended against any new restrictions on development within hazardous zones.


The commission is comprised of two subcommittees. one is the Title 49 subcommittee, which is responsible for reviewing and revising the land use code, as well as the governance committee, which determines the rules of the commission’s meetings.


Commissioners are paid a stipend amounting to $225 per month.


The three seats available have two-year terms, which begin in January. The city had originally had set a deadline for applications of November. 29 but it has been extended to December. 4.

Hospital board

The hospital board supervises the operations and management for the municipally owned Bartlett Regional Hospital. The board elected an interim chief financial officer in the month of May as well as an interim CEO in the summer of this year.

The city code stipulates that the ideal board members should have previous experience in areas such as finance, health care and strategic planning, or law. The board members could be doctors recommended by hospital staff. However, other than that, board members as well as the immediate relatives of board members aren’t allowed to be employed at the hospital.


The three seats that are open have two-year terms, which begin in January. The deadline for applications has been extended until December. 4.

Board of Equalization


The Board of Equalization hears property appeals to assessors, typically between May through July. The Board is composed of nine members and they are seated on panels of three for hearing appeals.


Its style=”font-weight 400″ ;”>”We haven’t been able to have a full nine people serving on the board for a lot many years,”” McEwen said. “So the five members who have been on the board over the last couple of years have had to be on these three-person panels a less frequently. .”


Board of Equalization members receive a stipend of $100 per Appeal hearing.


The board has a total of four seats available. The deadline for applications is December. 6. The Assembly will look over applications and make recommendations at the end of December. 11.

Systemic Racism Review Committee

The Systemic Racism Review Committee, established in the year 2020,, examines whether city laws perpetuate the systemic racism. If so it, the committee issues suggestions to the Assembly on ways to end it.


“Generally the Assembly meets on a Monday night and the following day it is the Systemic Racism Review Committee is studying the legislation that was presented,” McEwen said.

The year 2022 was the last time the group raised the issue of the legislation that sought to rezone an area that was previously residential as a commercial area.


There is one spot open for a term which begins immediately and continues until June 2025. Members don’t receive an salary.


The city will accept applications until December. 4. The Assembly will be interviewing candidates in mid-December.
