Juneau Assembly has named Katie Koester who is the director of public works for the city as the city’s new manager.

Koester succeeds Rorie Watt, who announced his retirement in April after 30 years working for the city. In the seven-year period he served as the city’s chief, Juneau experienced rapid growth in tourism, fought the outbreak and began an economic revival.
Koester was appointed Juneau’s director of public works and engineering in 2019.. Prior to that, she had been the city’s manager since Homer Her hometown since 2015.
She has an advanced diploma in administration for public service from the University of Alaska Southeast and an advanced degree in political sciences in the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.
Member of the Assembly Christine Woll said candidates from across the country submitted applications. She said the best candidates were interviewed by the entire Assembly and also met with top city officials.

Koester stated that she likes to imagine Engineering as a “doing department.” She believes that the experience she gained there will be useful when she becomes the city’s manager.

Koester’s pay will be $210,000. Koester will start her new job in September along with Watt in his final month in the job.
