Ketchikan was blessed with nearly seven inches of rainfall on Tuesday, breaking the record for the most rainfall on the same day.
Grant Smith is a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Juneau. He claims it was a day of rain however, for Ketchikan the weather was it was not the way. it was rainy.
“Ketchikan airport’s overall record is 14th day with the most rain,” he said. “So I’m assuming that this was not even an event in the top 10 for Ketchikan. This kind of sheds the spotlight on how sloppy the Ketchikan area is during the extreme rain events.”
The remnants of the Typhoon Bolaven brought rainfall in from the Pacific. The typhoon has brought rainfall to the Southeast region for several days.
“A significant amount of water was just trapped within this,” Smith said. “Everything was set yesterday for us to get Ketchikan nearly 7 feet of water in a single day.”
Ketchikan is among the most rain-prone towns in America. The single-day record is close to nine inches. It was recorded on the 11th of October. 11, 1977.
Averagely, Ketchikan gets nearly 150 inches of rainfall per year.
