According to Alaska State Troopers, a muskox attacked and murdered a man in Nome on Tuesday.

Austin McDaniel, spokesperson for Troopers, said Curtis Worland tried to get a group muskox away his dog kennel when one of them attacked him. At the scene, he was declared dead.

Worland was a Nome court services officer and had been in Nome since 2009.

McDaniel stated that Curtis Worland was a dedicated member of Alaska Department of Public Safety. He will be greatly missed as a court service officer and served the state well.

McDaniel stated that a 911 dispatcher informed troopers of the fatal attack. Alaska Department of Fish and Game and Alaska Wildlife Troopers will be investigating. McDaniel stated that they might kill the muskox if it is deemed to be a threat to public safety.

Fatal muskox encounters for humans are very rare. However, news outlets have reported that dogs attacked and killed dogs in rural Alaska.
