Judy Sherburne has said she’s always considering how people in Juneau receive their food.

” style=”font-weight 400 ;”>”I’ve been told that if we didn’t have a barge to use for a week it would be pretty slim,” she said. “And the next couple of weeks could be pretty serious. .”

Sherburne established Sherburne was the organizer of the Thane Community Garden The garden is currently in its very first season. She was looking for an opportunity for neighbors to get together to plant seeds in a sun-drenched flat, open space for community.

The garden is comprised of around 40 beds. In late June, they were all used and the new growth is starting to come up. Sheep Creek rushes by in the background. Certain beds are covered with plastic hoops to protect the veggies Some have windmills with shiny surfaces to discourage ravens.

Lauren Smoker helped get the project started. She owns a 20-foot by 4-foot bed.

Her chives have already grown tall. Smoker is the first person to grow vegetables, and she’s certainly not the only one who is beginning, Sherburne says.

She has gained new acquaintances through the gardens. The crops they’re growing can help put high-quality meals on their table, and cut down on their grocery costs. According to her, about 10% of those who are cultivating plots this summer are with fixed incomes, which means it is harder to manage the increasing prices for food.

The plots aren’t huge enough to sustain a family, Sherburne says even a small amount of organic food can make a big difference in the health of a person. She gestures at an area of kale.

It’s a good idea to use the style=”font-weight 400 ;”>”It’s not going to be a major factor for anyone who’s in this situation However, it could be an addition to the things they can do by earning money,” she said. “Having a fresh salad in the kitchen every night is a huge benefit. .”

Sherburne has announced that she is planning to begin offering classes in the near future. She would like to educate people on how to get the most out of their garden with this kind of climate as well as what nutrients they can gain from the various plants they can plant.
