There won’t be any ferry connection from Juneau, Haines and Skagway this weekend because of repairs to the vessel M/V Hubbard.
Alaska Marine Highway System spokesperson Sam Dapcevich said one of the generators on the ferry began to shut down in a sporadic manner the day following the delivery of U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Senator. Lisa Murkowski to Haines. Instead of going to Skagway The Hubbard was able to return straight to Juneau.
“We have a technician coming here, and we have all the components ready for use and they’re preparing for tomorrow to finish the repair” Dapcevich said on Friday.
Dapcevich said that if repairs to the Hubbard go well on Saturday, they might take an a.m. journey from Haines the following Sunday. Passengers are advised to keep an eye on notices of service on the internet.
“If the chance arises they’re able quickly complete the repair and have it reviewed by coastguards, they’ll attempt to get the Sunday sailing as soon as they can,” he said.
In the meantime, however it is a bit late, the Hubbard is off the market until Sunday.
Passengers who booked travel plans in between Juneau, Haines and Skagway booked this weekend may receive a refund or be rebooked for later sailings. Another ferry is the Columbia will depart Juneau to Haines around 6:15 a.m. on Monday.
