Congresswoman Mary Peltola emphasized her support for Arctic drilling as well as the other Alaska energy projects during an open forum for her constituents in the last week.
“I’ve collaborated together with Senators Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan as well as our labor unions, and Alaskans from all regions to achieve an approval of the Willow proposal approved” she added, in reference to ConocoPhillips the latest project within the National Petroleum Reserve. “This is the biggest North Slope oilfield investment in years, and will create 22,000 jobs and billions dollars in revenues to Alaska.”
The week following marks her one-year anniversary of being a member of Congress. As she’s a Democrat seeking re-election in a state with oil production She’s standing out from the mainline of her party when it comes to energy. While Republicans such as her rival Nick Begich, aim to connect Peltolato the high cost of gas and the conservation policy that were implemented by that of the Biden administration. However, the senator opted to use the mostly scripted forum, advertised as a tele-townhall in order to promote her support for development.
In addition to praising Willow, Peltola also spoke about the support she has for the Alaskan Liquified Natural Gas export plan and other smaller green energy initiatives that benefit Alaska communities. Peltola stated that climate change has hit Alaskans especially hard, however she also criticized climate activists who are guilty of what she considers to be hypocrisy.
“I am a bit offended by certain extremist environmental groups” the woman said. “Because I don’t believe that they – and a lot of members of that movement are prepared to reduce the use of energy regardless of whether they’re on their laptops or their cars or planes however, they do demand that we cease producing.”
Her office called the tele-town hall as her first time using this format. One of the callers was the ninth-grade English teacher, who is now in Colorado and who spoke about how important leadership is.
