The rainy day on Thursday has melted the snowpack in Juneau which could increase the likelihood of avalanches and flooding.

It’s a span style=”font-weight 400 ;”>”You have these drains that are covered in snow and drains which are coated with snow. The water is moving at a slower pace than it usually does,” she said.

Avoid parking in the vicinity of storm drains, as the rain will continue through Thursday night. The rain will continue, with scattered showers Friday and temperatures of the upper 40s. Winds are expected to be more calm.


The latest urban avalanche alert has been set to “high.”


The span style=”font-weight 400 ;”>”All this snow that is up there is getting added weight. As the temperature warms, it’s becoming weaker,” said Tom Mattice director of emergency programs for the city.


He states that the likelihood for loose, wet avalanches will rise until the temperature reaches its peak Thursday night.


The most heavy rain is likely to ease by the weekend, with dry conditions expected to return on Saturday.
