Sealaska Heritage Institute is seeking Alaska Native artists to pitch concepts for Celebration Every other year, Celebration is a event for Indigenous people living in Southeast Alaska. Celebration runs from June 5-8.

SHI The President of SHI Kaahani Rosita Worl says this year’s theme is “Together we are in harmony,” and designs should represent that through Northwest Coast style art. The winning design will be displayed on all Celebration items, including t-shirts as well as the program.

Worl explained that creating a harmonious equilibrium between the various Southeast Alaska Native people in the region is vital to ensuring that relationships last to ensure the future generations.

Its style=”font-weight 400 ;”>”The entire notion of balance between spiritual and social is the fundamental underlying principle or value that is a part of our society,” she said. “We require both spiritual and social equilibrium to ensure an enlightened society.”

Worl claimed that balance is a key belief of Lingit culture, which dates to thousands of years ago. A good example of this is evident in those Lingit theories consisting of Raven as well as Eagle. Even today, she said it’s vital to maintain a healthy balance between the different moieties at gatherings.

It’s a span style=”font-weight 400 ;”>”When there is somebody from the Raven clan it is imperative to maintain the ability to balance, so an Eagle must respond,” Worl said. “If we don’t then we are of the opinion that spirits may wander and do harm.

Worl said SHI has asked artists to express the balance, not just within Alaska Native peoples but also in the natural world surrounding Juneau. Sketches of concepts are due January. 12, and applicants are able to submit their applications on the internet. The artist who is selected will receive a cash prize.
