Lituya, the Alaska Marine Highway System ferry, will be out-of-service until February 1. This is according to the state transportation department. The announcement was made a week after the boat had stopped running to Metlakatla.

Shannon McCarthy, spokesperson for Alaska Department of Transportation, claims that the boat’s generator has failed.

McCarthy sent an email to KRBD Monday stating that technical representatives had been analyzing the problem on Saturday. They should have more information on the timeline and repair details soon.

While it is off-line, the Inter-Island Ferry Authority (a small regional ferry company) will continue to fill in for Lituya. The sailing schedule to Prince of Wales Island will not be affected.

The boat will depart Ketchikan around 11:30 am and arrive in Metlakatla around 12:15 pm.
