A former Alaskan Tommy Beaudreau is stepping out of the No. 2 spot within the U.S. Department of Interior.

A deputy secretary for Interior is a key source of contact with Sen. Lisa Murkowski, who has said she trusts the deputy secretary and appreciated her Alaska roots.

“He was raised in Alaska He attended the Alaskan High School, and his parents were part of the business which has created Alaska,” she said. “And this gave him some comfort in knowing he was familiar with the state of Alaska.”

The family of Beaudreau’s relocated into Anchorage in 1979 so that his father could be employed in Prudhoe Bay. The school he attended graduated Service High in 1990.

Beaudreau is involved in a variety of important Alaska issues in the Interior which includes the decision to approve Willow and the ConocoPhillips oilfield located on the North Slope, and others which impeded resource development.

The Interior department announced his departure on Wednesday, but without providing any reason.

Murkowski thought he was probably exhausted.

“These aren’t simple tasks, and I believe the man really put in his time for a few decades,” she said.
