The National Weather Service in Juneau has issued a warning about flooding for the areas around Jordan Creek, Montana Creek and Auke Lake through early Friday morning, as rainstorms continue to stall out across Juneau.
The span style=”font-weight 400 ;”>”We are already witnessing small impact in Jordan Creek right now,” said meteorologist Nathan Compton. “We are now just beginning to get close to the moderate levels of flood. If you’re anywhere near Jordan Creek, you should be utilizing some kind or action .”
A tidal river that swept through the panhandle Wednesday afternoon has already dropped many inches of rain across the area, with an additional one to two inches of rain expected on Thursday afternoon and evening.
As much as one foot of floodwater is likely to affect houses near the banks, since the water levels will rise throughout the afternoon and evening. Water pooling on the roads in the vicinity of Jordan Creek and some sections of Glacier Highway could create dangerous conditions.
Rain also has the potential to flood boats. Boat owners must ensure that their bilge pumps function in a proper manner.
Compton stated that heavy rainstorms like this are normal for the first week of fall.
span style=”font-weight 400 ;”>”September is our stormy season, and it’s the time when we typically witness the highest rainfall,” Compton said. “This isn’t a top-of-the-line atmospheric river event, however we are witnessing some impacts.”
The most heavy rain is likely to end at midnight on Friday morning, and flooding waters rising shortly afterwards.
