Musk conducted informal Twitter polls in recent weeks before he stated that he would reinstate accounts suspended by former President Donald Trump. He also said that the new site policy would be “freedom to speech but not freedom to reach”. This means that hate and negative tweets will be less visible.

“I tried my best. He violated our rule against incitement towards violence again, but he did so. Musk sent an overnight message to a Twitter user, threatening to suspend his account and telling him to fix Kanye.

Ye’s Twitter account showed a message that said “Account suspended” Friday. It wasn’t clear how long the suspension would last.

Two former employees spoke anonymously to discuss company policies and said that Ye’s tweet about swastika would have violated Twitter’s rules on hateful material, not incitement, but rather the rules on hateful speech. One employee said that Ye would have been expelled from the site if he had violated the hateful conduct policy. Ye’s account had already received multiple strikes.

Twitter and Musk didn’t respond to our requests for comment. Ye was not reached.

Musk used Twitter to defend Ye’s suspension. Tweeting, “You Know Twitter Is Fair When Extremists on Far Right and Far Left are Both Upset!”

Ye, who was formerly Kanye West, has been suspended from Twitter. He began making antisemitic comments online, in interviews, and on social media. This led to him losing lucrative business deals.

Ye was not immediately able to tweet for his 31 million followers. Ye had a verified account that posted a screenshot to Truth Social stating that he was suspended from Twitter for 12hrs. His Twitter account was suspended Friday afternoon after that period.

Musk bought the site in October for $44 billion. He has been moving quickly to move the company in his free speech visions. He has also reduced more than half of the 7,500 employees and trimmed workers not “hardcore.”

He has taken many content moderation decisions for the site into his own hands. He declared last week that he would remove the accounts that were banned after re-instating Trump. After a flood, fake accounts, he launched and delayed a new Twitter paid verification mark.

He accused Apple of publicly accusing him of threatening to delete Twitter from the App Store on Monday. He tweeted that he had met with CEO Tim Cook, and that Cook said he did not intend to delete the app.

“Tim was certain that Apple never thought of doing so,” he wrote.
